But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence - 1 Peter 3:15

The Holy Spirit, Electricity or God?

The official web site of Jehovah's Witnesses is adamant that the Holy Spirit is similar to "electricity" and is NOT a person.

One of a number of articles that deal with the Holy Spirit is an article entitled, "The Holy Spirit-God's Active Force." 10 times in this rather brief article the society refers to the Holy Spirit as a "force" and not a person. They define this force as follows:

"THE Bible's use of 'Holy Spirit' indicates that it is a controlled force that Jehovah God uses to accomplish a variety of his purposes. To a certain extent, it can be likened to electricity, a force that can be adapted to perform a great variety of operations."

The last paragraph of this article sums up the society's teaching:

"No, the Holy Spirit is not a person and it is not part of a Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God's active force that he uses to accomplish his will. It is not equal to God but is always at his disposition and subordinate to him."

indicating the holy spirit is NOT a person.

The society fails to understand that the attributes of a person or personality are, mind, emotions, and will...a force does not have these attributes.

The Holy Spirit has a MIND as in 1 Cor 2:11:

"For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."

EMOTIONS... Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Grief is an emotion that a person would have. How can you grieve a force?

WILL....I Corinthians 12:11 the Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts "to each one individually just as He wills."

In Acts 6:6 the Holy Spirit exercises his will by forbidding Paul to preach in Asia and redirects him to minister in Europe.

The spirit bears witness in John 15:26:

"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:"

The spirit intercedes for us as Jesus in Romans 8:28:

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express."

Witnesses claim The Holy Spirit cannot be a person because it doesn't have a name such as, Jehovah, Jesus or Holy Spirit

Spiritual Beings are not always named in Scripture but are often identified by their character....wicked, unclean etc...the character of the Holy Spirit is HOLY....

Witnesses claim since the Holy Spirit can fill many people at once it cannot be a person. This does not make the Spirit a non-person only that he has the power and ability to be omnipresent as is Gods.

What does the Holy Spirt think of Himself:

"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." Acts 13:2

Finally, the Holy Spirit is GOD.

"But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? ...thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God." Acts 5:3-4
